  • Sjimmie Veenhuis

Sjimmie Veenhuis creates artworks in which he uses existing materials in their original form. Through the reinterpretation of concrete and recognisable visual elements of the material itself, our substantive alienation in relation to our immediate surroundings and their functionality becomes perceptible.

The installations made by Veenhuis are developed from logical choices that arise from the intrinsic characteristics of the material. These characteristics form a binding framework and have a direct influence on the available possibilities and the final composition. The meaning of the artworks often resonates deliberately with their surroundings and the context in which they appear. In the work of Veenhuis, in which everyday appearances and questioning their meaning is the starting point, current affairs force themselves upon us in an unexpected way.

Sjimmie Veenhuis (1984) graduated from the Minerva Academy in 2011. Besides two-dimensional work, he also realizes site-specific work on both indoor and outdoor locations. An example of the latter is the work Action>Reaction 2.0, a computer-controlled installation with LED lighting, shown at the Amsterdam Light Festival 2018 and in 2020 at the Battersea Power Station, London (UK).
