Inez Smit

nl 1967

The paintings of Inez Smit are composed of all kinds of layers that relate to each other. Layers that, in terms of lines, surfaces or colour palette, sometimes follow each other or cross each other’s path, then cover each other or flow together. Some spaces are narrow, open and transparent, others are large and seem to have mass. You can also wander between front and back, as everything is equally important in the painting. There is no beginning and no end. We believe to see a fraction of an infinitely continuous space with architectural rhythms as a motif.

Smit starts with a first set-up and that is interrupted during the further process by a new starting point, whereby the impact of the previous one remains visible. According to Smit, an exciting arrangement arises, which does not stem from a preconceived plan but from the painting process. Just as you think you are discovering a pattern or repetition, this turns out to be seemingly so; with a deviating shape, line thickness or colour, the ‘pattern’ is continued with a different approach.
